José López Portillo y Pacheco
President of the Republic of Mexico 1976 – 1982
Born in Mexico City, José López Portillo y Pacheco received his Law Degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and practiced law until 1960, the year he entered public service. He became the President of the Republic of Mexico in 1976. A professor of political science and public administration at UNAM and the National Polytechnical Institute, López Portillo has been awarded honorary degrees, Doctor of Honoris Causa, by many distinguished universities and institutions. His other works include Génesis y Teoría General del Estado Moderno; Quetzalcóatl; Don Q; Mis Tiempos (his memoirs).
