Through theories on parody and irony, Carlos Von Son examines four contemporary Mexican novels (De Perfil, by José Augustín; Relámpagos de agosto, by Jorge Ibargüengoitia; Querido Diego, te abraza Quiela, by Elena Poniatowska; and Sed de Mar, by Esther Seligson). Von Son explores how these books probe the composition of Mexican national identity by questioning accepted myths through four generations of political and social history. These novels embody the use of parody and irony in Mexican literature, and with them Von Son presents an analytical method applicable to a large number of works.
